Chronology

May 24, 1911 Herbert William Clutter is born.
Jan. 7, 1914 Bonnie Mae Fox Clutter is born.  She would later become the wife of Herbert Clutter.
Oct. 27, 1928 Perry Edward Smith is born in Huntington, Nevada, to rodeo performers Florence Julia "Flo" Buckskin and John "Tex" Smith.
1929 The Smith family moves to Juneau, Alaska, where the elder Smith distills bootleg whisky for a living.
June 6, 1931 Richard Eugene Hickock is born in Kansas City, Kansas to farmworker parents.
1935 Claiming abuse, Flo Smith, an alcoholic, leaves Tex Smith and takes Perry Smith and his siblings with her to San Francisco.
1941-1942 Flo Smith dies.  At the age of 13, Perry Smith and his siblings are placed in a Catholic orphanage, where nuns allegedly abused him physically and emotionally for his lifelong problem of chronic bed wetting.  He was also placed in a Salvation Army orphanage, where one of the caretakers allegedly tried to drown him.
Jan. 2, 1943 Nancy Mae Clutter is born to Herbert and Bonnie Clutter, in Holcomb, Kansas.  She would be the youngest of their three daughters, and had two older sisters, Eveanna and Beverly.
Aug. 28, 1944 Kenyon Neal Clutter is born to Herbert and Bonnie Clutter, in Holcomb, Kansas.  He would be their only son.
ca. 1944-1945 At age 16, Perry Smith joins the United States Merchant Marine.
1948 Perry Smith joins the army, and serves in the Korean War.  During his stint in the army, he spends weeks at a time in the stockade for public carousing and fighting with Korean civilians and other soldiers.
1950 Richard Hickock suffers head injuries from a serious automobile accident which leaves him disfigured.
1952 In spite of his troublesome army record, Smith receivs an honorable discharge from the army.  He relocates to the Tacoma, Washington, area, where he stays with a friend and finds employed as a car painter.
Nov. 1959 Richard Hickock is released from Kansas State Prison at Lansing,Kansas, and resumes his acquaintance with Perry Smith.
Nov. 14, 1959 Hickock and Smith travel across Kansas in a car with stolen license plates, with the goal of locating the Clutter home which they believed to contain a safe.
Nov. 15, 1959 Hickock and Smith enter an unlocked door at the Clutter home and rouse the family from sleep.  Upon learning that there is no safe in the house, they murder Herbert, Bonnie, Nancy and Kenyon Clutter.
Dec. 30, 1959 Perry Smith and Richard Hickock are captured in Las Vegas, Nevada, following an extensive manhunt which extended into Mexico.
1960 Hickock and Smith are convicted of the murders of the Clutter family, and are sentenced to death.
April 14, 1965 After five years on death row, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith are executed by hanging at Kansas State Prison in Lansing,Kansas.
ca. 1964-1967 Perry Smith's father, Tex, moves to Cold Springs, Nevada, where he lives to the age of 92 before committing suicide, distraught over poor health.
